I've actually started making terrain pieces instead of improvising items like I have been doing since I moved to New Zealand. Ruins actually have to look like ruins as the open boxes I've used in the passed would completely block line of sight like the complete buildings. I finally removed the plastic ruins that I got with the third edition from their sprue as well as making some simple replications of the cardboard ruins which came with the second edition box set.
From what I've observed of other peoples' battle photos I use a very very heavy terrain layout. I recently tried a table more lightly built and I disliked the loss of tactical action that occurred.
I built an Imperial guard Listening Post at the beginning of the year, this has made an almost impervious objective which has made for some interesting battles.
